Ilminster Green team

This morning most of Moana syndicate went to Ilminster Intermediate  to watch a play performed by the Ilminster green team. The play was about recycling. I was very excited.

Firstly Nanny Kōura a crayfish told her grandkids to go to bed but they wanted another story so she decided to tell the story about the time she saved the world from the aliens. Secondly some kids went to the skate park and dropped lolly wrappers. Then the king Alien, two normal  Aliens and a robot decided to dump their rubbish at the skate park. Then they left the Robot there. The next day the kids went back to the skatepark and found the robot, they got the robot to call the Aliens and told them to stop dumping their rubbish, but they didn't listen.

Secondly the kids went to Nanny Kōura and asked her to help Nanny Kōura said she wouldn't help because they dump their rubbish, then Nanny Kōura agreed to help. They got the robot to call back the Aliens and Nanny Kōura pretended to be the long lost Alien Queen and made them stop dumping rubbish.

I loved the play it was very fun to watch and had a good message about not littering.

Speech performances and Flooding

Last thursday we did speeches it was good it was on thursday because there was so much rain we couldn't go outside. My speech was about Emma Twigg. There were loads of good speeches that I enjoyed.

About 3/4 of the way through one person went home, an then another and another. People kept coming in to tell people their parents were here to take them home. I had already done my speech but it was really annoying getting disrupted.

Almost half the class had left when the teachers (Koka Rozie and Koka Pip) decided we should just stop speeches because of all the disruptions. Then someone asked 'why is everyone leaving' Koka Rozie replied 'there's a risk of flooding from all the rain. And parents can come pick up their children' I looked out at the grass there were ankle deep puddles everywhere and little awa on the hills that wasn't there before.

I stayed at school for a little longer then mum came and picked me up. We had to drive out to Campion- my sister Nellie's school- to pick Nellie up. On the way we had to drive through massive puddle, it was like swimming. We picked up Nellie and two of her friends on the way back from Campion Gisborne was declared in a state of emergency so we went home and ate mars bars and hot chocolate. Sponge bay was told to evacuate. Our school hall was a safe place for people who had to evacuate.

Term 4 Week One/Speeches

On Monday everyone came to school for the first time in 2 weeks and this term we have speeches. My speech is about Emma Twigg an Olympic gold medalist in rowing, I hope you like it.

Lisa Mangum said “Make your own decisions. Make your own choices.” It’s a simple quote but I think it’s very impactful. I think NZ's most inspirational olympian, Emma Twigg definitely made her own decisions and choices- With her job and relationships- about things that made her happy and didn’t care what others thought.

I think Emma Twigg is NZ's best olympian because she is very passionate and had to persevere a lot to win a gold medal. And went to the olympics four times before she won a medal.

“Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th” Julie Andrews. Emma Twigg  went to the olympics in 2008 in Beijing, 2012 in London and  2016 in RIo de Janeiro and of course 2021 in tokyo. And the first time she went she came ninth, then in 2012 she came 4th then she came fourth again by 0.3 seconds, then this year she won her first gold medal. She retired from rowing twice.  Once for master level studies then a second time after narrowly missing a medal in 2016, then started training again in 2018.

Rachel Wolchin-author of the good vibe- once said People too often forget that it is your own choice how you want to spend the rest of your life. I think Emma Twigg didn’t forget this and made the choice to marry Charlotte, knowing that people might judge her, not agree with her choice. She is very comfortable talking about her choice.

Emma Twigg has a few major achievements. Like a few world titles and an olympic medal. All of which she had to work very hard to achieve.

Olympics

How much do you know about the Olympics?

Well I do and that's because in MLH we are learning all about the Olympics & the Paralympics.

We have to complete a booklet with things that we learnt we had to choose our favourite NZ Olympic and Paralympic athlete (if you don't know the Paralympics are for people with less able bodies.) When we picked our favourites we drew a picture of them and answered questions like where were they born there past achievements, birthday, Age and sport. I chose Sophie Pascoe (Paralympic swimmer) She has won 15 Paralympic medals. This success has now made Sophie the most decorated New Zealand Paralympian ever! Cool right! And I chose Jonelle price (Olympic Equestrian) she won bronze medal in 2016 in Rio.

I loved learning about these Olympians & Paralympians and just the Olympics in general.

  3. Where is the book set? It is set in a small street in Pippin.

  4. If the book was a TV show, who would I cast in it? Maggie smith for Connie the old lady. Lulu Wilson or Lila Prideaux for the main Character. Michelle Pfeiffer for the mum.

  5. If I lived next door to the main character would we be friends? Probably because we both like horses and are around the same age.

Wednesday after Lunch

At school a group of people were chatting until on person said three simple words, "Wednesday after lunch." Everyone went crazy with excitement.

Well we were chatting and this did happen but it was a play. We were waiting for our drama teacher Silke to come. I love drama it's amazing I learn so much from the lesson every Wednesday after lunch, we are doing a play about whales but there is a Hawaiian scene when kids have a surf lesson I'm a child and I'm having a surf lesson with Rio, Charlotte and Te Atawhai are the teachers.

Sadly this week Silke wasn't here, we waited then the teacher remembered she wasn't coming.

Aurora Drama

Last Friday I went to Maraka School for Aurora Drama it was really fun. I got picked to do the drama program with Ella and Klara, we learnt a lot about Whirikoka and his seal Oioi. We got on a bus and went to a pā site in Whatatutu. The owner lived in the place where Whirikoka lived, the owner Marcus lived in the Marae and was rebuilding the pā on a hill to how it looked when the Maori tribe lived there. Marcus let us go in the fire pit and huts he said he had been working on it for six years, he said was going to make a natural swimming pool with a water fall and a slide with a statue of Oioi. I loved it and the food was delicious they made bacon and egg pies and donuts. We're doing a play about Whirikoka. I can't wait till next week.

Cooks Cove

"I'm gonna miss the bus!"  My sister Nellie yelled banging on the bathroom door, "It's not the end of the world" I replied Cheerfully she punched me. I rubbed my arm and poked my tounge out at her,I hoped in the car and finished my breakfast on the way to school. My mum drove me to  school last Thursday because we were walking up Cooks Cove in preparation for year six camp and she was a parent helper. When I got to school all the year six's divided into groups with the parents they were driving with, I was in my mums car with Amber and Ella. This was good because we all do horse riding so we had something to  talk about. As I predicted we spent the whole drive talking about horses.

When we arrived at Cooks Cove me and Ella went and sat on the fence. The teachers divided us into our camp groups. My group was at the front of the line, Raphi,Momo and Ella were in my walking group and Marcus was the parent. The walk was easy and fast for about the first ten seconds then we got to the stairs and it started getting steeper and steeper... When we got to the top of the hill I was hot and sweating. By this time we were at the back of the line but the hardest part was behind us. We kept walking and soon we were in my favourite part of the walk the bush,Yay!

We walked down hill and me and Ella chatted trying to keep in a single file line. It was tricky but most of the time we managed. "Did you hear that" I asked Ella, "No" she tried to hear "exactly" I ran to keep up with the rest of the group. My ears were filled with quiet whispering about five groups were craning their heads to see something in the bushes. "Can you see it, where is it, it's so pretty, what's all the fuss about" everyone was talking about the same thing and it became apparent to me when I looked up there sittin in a tree in the middle of the day was a beautiful morepork everyone stared at it.

But sadly all this standing around looking at the morepork made us far behind the rest of the group so we had to run to keep up. Soon the bush opened out into hills of grass and we had lunch at Cooks Cove, then we went through to the Hole in the wall. We walked all the way back. By the time we finished the walk most of us were red faced and panting, "My feet hurt" someone said. But the fun didn't last long because that night there was a giant earthquake.

Here are some of my favorite pictures of the amazing time we all had.

  Morpork.
My walking group.

Us at the lookout.
